The Planemakers’ Roundtable was probably the most common
classes at Fashionable Woodworking in America 2016, with
dialogue matters starting from steel vs. wooden planes, to
low-priced knock-offs. Panelists Raney Nelson (Daed Toolworks), Rick
Blaiklock (Lee
Valley/Veritas
), Caleb James (Caleb James
Planemaker)
, Konrad Sauer (Sauer & Steiner
Toolworks
) and Thomas Lie-Nielsen (Lie-Nielsen Toolworks),
with moderator Christopher Schwarz (contributing
editor, Popular Woodworking
; editor, Lost Art Press)
talked for nearly two hours on all issues planes and
planemaking.

We caught a little bit of the dialogue on video (please forgive
the however semi-OK audio; we weren’t in a position to mic the
members to the digicam). Chris famous that the panelists
select different types of metal for his or her respective aircraft
blades, then requested them to debate their selections. On the finish
of the day, what’s most essential is that every one these makers’
blades might be sharpened to a excessive degree, and that they keep
a long-lasting edge – however the causes every maker choose one
metal configuration over one other are fascinating. Have a
look.
