Gramercy Holdfasts-the Real Story

Gramercy Holdfast
Method again in 2005, I
wrote an article for
issue #4 of Woodworking Magazine
about holdfasts. On the
time, only a few woodworkers knew what a holdfast was, and the
article reviewed out there manufactured holdfasts, in addition to a
few blacksmith made ones. We lately put the
original holdfast article online
, and included a hyperlink to
the article in
our weekly newsletter
for the primary week of July.

One of many units we examined in 2005 was a prototype of a hand
cast holdfast made by Gramercy instruments and supplied by
Tools For Working Wood
. That model by no means went into
manufacturing, and a few months after we went to press,
Gramercy launched a wholly totally different holdfast.

The manufacturing model was an enormous enchancment, works extremely
nicely for an inexpensive worth and holds like loopy, even in thick
bench tops. The one within the image at proper is the one I’ve
been utilizing for the final seven years. I personalized it by gluing
a scrap of leather-based to the pad, and it has faithfully held my
work practically each time I’ve been within the store. I’ve smacked it
1000’s of occasions and it has by no means let me down.

Had this been out there on the time the unique article was
written, the article would have been fairly totally different. This software
performs in addition to blacksmith made holdfasts, higher than any
different manufactured holdfast, and the worth makes it an actual
worth.

We reviewed this model of the Gramercy holdfast in print in
the December
2005 issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine.
Here’s what
then editor Christopher Schwarz needed to say:

Holdfasts that Actually Work
Holdfasts are one thing of an obsession of mine. They’re an
almost-vanished software that does a tremendous job of shortly
securing your work with only a mallet faucet. Sadly, the one
ones that basically work nowadays are these made by
blacksmiths. All of the manufactured ones we’ve examined are poor
substitutes.

Till now. The masterminds at Instruments for Working Wooden have
patented a course of for making a holdfast that works
terribly nicely for an equally extraordinary worth:
about $30 for a pair. We had been allowed to check a preproduction
model of this software and had been very impressed once we in contrast
it to the opposite dozen or so variants in our store. This new
one from Instruments for Working Wooden – bought beneath its Gramercy
Instruments line – has a little bit of a high-tech look, nevertheless it works as
nicely (and  generally higher) than the old-school
variations.

It really works nicely in thick benchtops (which is at all times a
problem) and in holes three⁄four″ and 11⁄16″ in diameter. Purchase a
pair. It’s going to change your workholding for the higher –
immediately.
— Christopher Schwarz

Quick ahead seven years and you will discover
Gramercy holdfasts
on our benches right here on the journal store
and our benches at house. These are nice instruments, and an
wonderful worth. We apologize for any confusion caused
by our reuse of an older article on-line.
